How to detect you have oil and gas on your property?
Crude oil and natural
gas are often occurred together, the presence of one in an area may indicate
the presence of the other. In the oil and gas sector, the two are of tremendous
importance.
Natural gas is an expression
used in reference to a number of flammable, gaseous fossil fuels. These mostly
consist of methane, methane derivatives, and hydrocarbons (compounds made of
hydrogen and carbon). Natural gas is commonly used in the industries and homes.
Surface
Conditions of the soil and plant observation
Observing the condition of the surface soil and plant life is
very important to detect the presence of natural gas on your property. Studies show
that unpredicted drying out or dying off of grass and other vegetation may
indicate that there is natural gas beneath the surface. Although, a
leaking pipe can produce the same effects, as opposed to a natural deposit. Large
amounts of coal in your property’s soil could indicate a natural deposit of
coalbed methane, which is a natural gas trapped between layers of coal
deposits.
The Adjacent
Deposits of the property
According to studies, natural gas is able to seep through
tiny fractures in rock and mineral layers beneath the ground. This course of
action allows it to travel across vast subterranean distances, including across
property lines. Hence, if the owner of a neighbouring or otherwise close-by
property has “struck” natural gas, there is an increased likelihood that
natural gas lies beneath your property. Then, you should act fast because it is
possible for neighbours to “take” the gas out from beneath your feet. The downside
of natural gas can move so easily underground.
The Sound
Waves produced in the area
Shooting sound waves down through the soil and record them as
they bounce back to the surface is one of the scientific methods by which you
can determine your property has natural gas. You can create these waves by
dropping a weighted object onto your property or through the use of small,
controlled explosions. You should look for the help of a geologist or other
qualified professional before attempting any of these types of tests on your
property.
Measuring
the gravitational pull of the area
Also, a good geologist may be able to help you locate natural
gas on your property. It could be by measuring the gravitational pull of the
underlying ground formations. You can to do this is by making pendulum
measurements, wherein you estimate the gravitational acceleration in a
particular area by measuring the oscillation of a pendulum.
The Odour of
the area
Natural gas is tasteless and odorless. Before natural gas is piped into a home or
sold in the market, an odourant has been added (called mercaptan) so that leaks
can be more easily detected. Rotten eggs
smelling of an area does not indicate it has natural gas deposit. The odour
could be of a leaking pipe of gas in that area.
